Viola Fisher, to whom the bridge is dedicated, was the first lead docent at the Leonora Curtin Natural History Area (renamed as Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve).
Ground water trickles down the middle of the Preserve, sometimes visible as a small stream. This water originates in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east, seeps underground, and surfaces in this wetland, taking about 600 years to make the journey.
