This is a Transitional Zone between the Riparian Zone along the stream bed and the Dry Upland Zone.
Interesting plants include the Pale wolfberry or Tomatillo (Lycium pallidum). This shrub is considered to be a drought indicator, having leaves when water is sufficient. It also has been used to identify ancient campsites.
Buffalo gourds or Stinking cucumbers (Cucurbita foetidissima) which flourish here are described as ill-smelling, perennial plants bearing large, rough, gray-green, triangular leaves on long trailing stems. The fruit is striped, pale and dark green and yellow when ripe.
