Stay on the trail and step carefully in this Dry Upland Zone. You'll find yuccas and cacti in various sizes, shapes, and varieties. One-seed junipers provide food and cover for birds. Look just off the trail for cryptogamic crust - lichens, mosses and fungi providing fragile soil structures which prevent erosion by wind and rain.
