Description This perennial is a native of Europe and Asia. Its stems are square, erect and very leafy. Its leaves are opposite, serrated and somewhat triangular in shape. The whole plant is densely downy, like felt. Hairs give the lower surfaces of the leaves a grayish appearance. The scent is minty with a slightly rank after-smell. It grows best in damp areas.
Mature Size 2’ – 3’. It grows taller where soil is very damp.
Bloom July – September. The tubular flowers are white or light pink with violet or purple markings. They grow in crowded terminal clusters.
Interesting Facts This plant secretes an aromatic oil that has a strange fascination for some cats. Most cats react by rubbing up against it and rolling around in it. It is harmless to the cats and nonaddictive.
Traditional and Medicinal Uses Nepeta cataria is a mild tranquilizer. It has been used for intestinal cramps, colic, toothaches, hives and as a cold remedy. It is used as stuffing in toys for cats. But this dried Catnip isn’t as attractive to cats as is the fresh.
