Botanical Name Cordylanthus wrightii
Common Name Birdbeak, Clubflower
Family Orobanchaceae – Broomrape. Formerly in the Scrophulariaceae – Snapdragon family.
Description This annual spindly is openly branched. The leaves are about 1" long and divided into very narrow segments that nearly clasp the stems. The bracts are leaflike. It grows in open, dry areas. Where you find one plant you will probably find many.
Mature Size 1’ – 2’.
Bloom This is a late bloomer— September and October. The color of the flower varies from white to dull violet, pink or purple. It resembles the beak of a bird and grows in clusters of 2 or 3 at the ends of branches. The flowers are about 1" long, stand erect and do not open wide.
Interesting Facts Most of the nearly 40 species of Birdbeaks grow in western North America.
