Common Name New Mexico checker mallow
Family Malvaceae - Mallow
Description Lowest leaves are nearly round. Upper leaves are smaller, usually divided into 7 lobes. This native plant grows near marshes and ponds.
Mature Size 2.5' - 3'
Bloom May-July. Various shades of purple or pink. 1"-1.5" wide. Has many stamens joined at the base. Crowded in long, narrow clusters.
Interesting Facts Grows in high, wet, sunny parts of north-central New Mexico.
Traditional and Medicinal Uses In New Mexico, the Ramah Navajo consumed a cold infusion of our native checker mallows for internal injuries. Leaves have been cooked as greens.
