Common Name Velvet weed, Small-flowered gaura
Family Onagraceae –- Evening primrose
Description This annual or biennial plant has hairy stems and leaves. The leaves are from ¾” to 6” long. The basal ones are broadest above the middle. The upper leaves are lance-shaped.
Mature Size Up to 6 feet
Bloom Flowers from late spring through out the summer. The flower consists of four white to pink petals spreading upward and eight red anthers on white filaments pointing downward.
Interesting Facts Gaura neomexicana (New Mexico guara) differs in having much larger flowers.
Traditional and Medicinal Uses Some Native American tribes used the roots to treat snakebite.
