Description This is a short-lived perennial plant. The leaves are red-green, hairy and about 2" long.
Mature Size 4"-12" x 6"
Bloom July-August. Hairy, red to red-orange in terminal clusters with narrow bracts.
Interesting Facts It is a native to the plains of eastern New Mexico and Colorado. Castilleja is a genus of parasite plants that must tap into the roots of other plants for their nutrients. It attracts hummingbirds.
Traditional and Medicinal Uses The leaves have been used in the cooking of beans and rice.
