The Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve offers a variety of flora that has yet to be identified. From a recent plant walk in the mountains (May 31st) we were able to identify a handful of new plants to add to the database. Before the plant walk there were 59 species, we now have 66!

These are the plants that were not in the database, linked are the ones we added:

Androsace septentrionalis (Pygmy flower, rock jasmine)

*Boechera fendleri (Fendler’s rockcress)

Ceanothus fendleri (Fendler’s ceanothus)

Cercocarpus montanus var. montanus (Mountain mahogany)

*Cirsium neomexicana (Wavyleaf thistle)

 Dalea scoparia (Broom dalea)

Dysphania graveolens (Fetid goosefoot)

Erigeron flagellaris (Trailing fleabane)

Erysimum capitatum (Western wallflower)

Mahonia sp.

Pectis sp.

Penstemon barbatus (Golden-beard penstemon)

Penstemon palmeri (Palmer’s penstemon)

*Physaria ovalifolia (Bladderpod)

Pinus ponderosa (Ponderosa pine)

Poa fendleriana (Mutton grass)

Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Douglas fir)

*Quercus undulata (Wavy leaf oak)

These are the plants we identified that were already in the database:

Bromus tectorum (Cheat grass)

Carex (Sedge)

Glandularia bipinnatifida (Purple prairie verbena)

Gutierrezia sarothrae (Snakeweed)

Heterotheca villosa (Hairy golden aster)

Elymus longifolius (Squirrel tail grass)

Lithospermum incisum (Narrow leaf stoneseed, fringed gromwell)

Physalis longifolia var. longifolia (Ground cherry)

Senecio spp (Groundsel)

Sphaeraclea spp (Globemallow)

Verbascum thapsus (Mullein)

The plants that are starred should be considered tentative. We hope to continue to grow our database!
