Birds and Plants and Third Graders
May Education Program
Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve
Well over two hundred third graders from Pinon and Turquoise Trail elementary schools with their teachers and volunteers came to LCWP for a morning of activity-based environmental education.

SFBG volunteers led three activities: learning to use binoculars at the pond, discovering five "bird important" plants on a plant treasure hunt, and constructing a birdfeeder plus playing a special LCWP Bird Bingo.

Many thanks to Creamland Dairy (milk cartons), Plants of the Southwest (sunflower seeds), and the Country Store (birdseed).

Dear Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve,

I loved the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve trip. I liked the part when we made birdfeeders. They really work. The pond was cool and it was cool to see the great blue heron and the red winged blackbird. The plants were incredible and now I know the difference between a male and female one-seed juniper.

It was fun when we used the binoculars because there was a red winged black bird on the cattail but then it flew away. One of my favorite parts was when we saw the baby birds in the cactus. It was funny when someone said, "I wouldn't want to live in the cactus because I would get pricked."

Thank you for letting us go to where you work and letting us see the birds and plants. Some day I will go again. Thanks for telling me all of that exciting stuff. I loved the treasure hunt and my sunflower seeds are starting to sprout. Nature is my favorite thing when it comes to animals! The plants we smelled, smelled good for they smelled like pepper and mint together.

P.S. It was the best field trip ever!
