NARROW LEAF COTTONWOOD - Populus angustifolia - Saliceae (Willow) family
Spanish: Alamo Sauco

This tree, a member of the willow family, can be seen growing along streams, offering its much needed magnificent shade as a respite from summer heat. In the autumn, its brillant yellow leaves have inspired artists and poets alike. The "fruit" or cotton was once used by dipping in water and applying to either swollen gums or an ulcerated tooth to obtain relief from the pain. In times past, a spring ritual was to purify the blood by steeping the cottonwood in cold water and then drinking.
