HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR GARDENERS
Mary Ann Walz

As the holiday season approaches and we scramble to find those perfect gifts, take a few minutes to consider some garden themed gifts for those special people on your list who are gardeners. Here are a few ideas.

A rich moisturizing hand cream, scented with essential oils, to repair working hands now that we’re not digging in the earth. For a more lavish gift, include body lotion, salt scrub, and bath gel or a lovely bar of soap.

Gloves are always appreciated. Goatskin gloves are especially luxurious. For a rose lover, a pair with long gauntlets would be appreciated.

Amaryllis bulbs along with a pretty cache pot will provide some bloom and greenery when winter is at its dreariest. Look for a favorite color or a new variety.

While we’re on plants, orchids have long lasting blooms that are loved by nearly all. Include an orchid pot or a book on orchids to be read on a long winter night.

Pots, pots and more pots. Does any gardener have enough? Glazed pots from Vietnam, Italian terra cotta, copper or other metals – the varieties of pots are amazing. Choose one or more to go with an existing scheme of pots or select one to go in a certain spot. A saucer to go underneath the pot is a nice added touch.

Gift certificates from nurseries will allow the recipient to choose things that are needed or select new varieties of plants in the spring. You might offer to go with the person to help load and unload or offer the use of a truck.

An antique watering can would be nice for a gardener who likes traditional things. It’s attractive enough to leave out in between watering sessions, adding to the décor of the garden. If antiques aren’t her style, select a pretty copper can or one in gleaming stainless steel.

Gardening books are numerous, informative, beautifully illustrated in most cases and great for winter reading. Many are geared toward the Santa Fe area. Alternatively, look for a book with a special interest or subject matter in mind.

If your gardener has everything, why not think of a SFBG membership or a donation to SFBG in their honor.

Thankfully, you won’t have to go to the mall for any of these. Check at your favorite nursery for any of the above gifts that are sure to please. Happy shopping and happy holidays.
