| LEONORA CURTIN WETLAND PRESERVE May 2004 Going Buggy! Carlos Gibert Elementary What's YOUR very favorite bug? If you're a second grader the "roly-poly" or "little VW" is the absolute favorite. Of course, there's also the "stink bug" which has its charms and the admirable but hard-to-catch praying mantis. Butterflies and dragonflies rate high on the "pretty" index while centipedes fall to "gross." It was a gorgeous May morning with insects to be found under rocks, on the path, in the air, and by the pond. Miss W's second graders from Carlos Gilbert Elementary were guided by "The Bug Lady," entomologist Linda Weiner, on their "buggy" field trip to LCWP. The second graders had already worked hard in the classroom learning about insects, helped by a grant from P.I.E. Walking (and running) the trail, swishing the butterfly nets, turning over logs, and watching the zooming dragonflies was the best kind of "show and tell." |
